Anthem Soccer Club's U-12 girl's team, the Anthem Jaguars, took first place in the U-11/U-12 division of the Yavapai Soccer Tournament last weekend. The Jaguars played a total of four games against teams from the both the Valley and Flagstaff and went undefeated, bringing home gold medals.
It was truly a team effort as the Jaguars only had the necessary eleven players to field a team. Every girl, played every minute, and had to give her all, in order to see the team through. Goals were scored by Diana Douglas, Sirina Natarajan, and Samantha Markey. Both Samantha and Sirina also had incredible saves in goal, as they shared the position of goal keeper. There was great hustle from forwards Mae Symmonds and Cassidy Sabodkin as they ran the play down the sidelines and crossed the ball to center field where Diana was often waiting.
Midfielders Erin Magoffie, Nicole Rocha-Turner, and Kaylene Connolly controlled the play with forward passes and being first on the ball whenever it was near. Sweeper, Coutney Connors, let nothing pass her in the other team's attempts to score, while Cami Wright and Hannah Berdal assisted Courtney in defense by swarming any offensive players before shots could get off.
This team has been together for several years and is enjoying great success. The Jaguars also took third place in Arizona's Open Cup just last month. There are several spots open on this team for next year's season. The season runs from August through April and any interested girls should attend Anthem Soccer Club's try-outs on May 19th.
